Another Distinction for the University of Kurdistan:

New Chironomidae Species Named in Honor of University of Kurdistan Staff Member

In a research article published in the scientific journal Zootaxa, a new species of the Chironomidae family identified in Costa Rica has been named in honor of a staff member from the University of Kurdistan.

According to the Public Relations Office of the University of Kurdistan, a recently published study in the scientific journal Zootaxa (Vol. 5793, No. 2, April 2026) describes a new species of the Chironomidae family, scientifically designated as Pseudorthocladius (Pseudorthocladius) edrisghaderii. Discovered and identified in Costa Rica, the species was named in honor of Dr. Edris Ghaderi, a staff member at the University of Kurdistan.

The article states: "This species is named in honor of Dr. Edris Ghaderi from the University of Kurdistan, Iran, in recognition of his years of support and scientific collaboration regarding the identification of species within this family."

It is noteworthy that Dr. Edris Ghaderi, alongside his colleagues at the University of Kurdistan and international collaborators, has recorded more than 50 species of the Chironomidae family in Iran. Furthermore, he has successfully identified and introduced two new genera, Eraniella (Iran) and Alaskscladius (USA-Alaska), within this family.

In addition, through collaborations with Dr. Habibollah Mohammadi and Dr. Erfan Karimian from the University of Kurdistan and other international partners, he has described 8 species of this family across Iran, Europe, and the United States.

Dr. Edris Ghaderi, who has been active for many years in the fields of aquatic ecology and aquatic taxonomy, has played a significant role through international partnerships in the identification and documentation of various species of fish and other aquatic organisms in Iran.
